Back Up…. What even are hot springs? Natural hot springs are the result of water beneath the Earth’s surface becoming so hot, it bubbles through the surface.  The water either gathers naturally, or sometimes it needs some help by man-kind, in that case, channels are created. You can find them in any geographical location – from deserts, to snow covered peaks to the tropics.

Regardless, these therapeutic waters have been a destination for centuries, for those looking to relax in mineral rich waters. Hot springs are without a doubt a wonder of our planet, and something that everyone should experience. Here are 8 of the world’s most breathtaking hot springs to get your ideas flowing!

CHAMPAGNE POOL, NEW ZEALAND

Topping off our list is the gorgeous Champagne Pools of New Zealand. Although you are unable to swim here, as temperatures reach around 165 degrees Fahrenheit, don’t count it out! The beauty of the contrasting technicolor water cannot be ignored. Visit one of the world’s most breathtaking sceneries and bask in natures undeniable beauty.

 

LA GRUTA HOT SPRINGS, MEXICO

The tradition of soaking in nature’s thermal pools can be traced back to the Aztecs in the 16th century. While natural springs are common throughout Mexico, the La Gruta Hot Springs in San Miguel de Allende are favored when in need of a restorative dip. At this highly sought-out destination, you will find a water-filled tunnel that empties out into a dome filled grotto which enclosing the majestic hot waters.

 

CRYSTAL POOL, KRABI, THAILAND

This magical destination is reached through trails winding through the Khao Nor Chu Chi forest.  This spring is accompanied by a refreshing river below, perfect for when visitors want to reset after soaking in the steaming waters. Because the water is enriched with minerals, it is said that submerging oneself in this pool can ease numerous health ailments, particularly skin related.

TABACON HOT SPRINGS, COSTA RICA

Of the many steaming pools within the Arenal, the Tabacon Hot Springs is the original pool and widely regarded as the best. This is a popular spot, but it’s possible to find privacy if you wish. The pools are created by two rivers that have been divided, which creates multiple temperatures. Go find which one best suits you!

 

HOT SPRINGS OF BANJAR AIR PANAS, BALI

The sacred pools of northern Bali are a series of stone pools, filled with spring water that flows from the mouths of stone nagas, or snake-like dragons, which have been carved in the walls. The pools are landscaped with tropical foliage and naturally heated to around 99 degrees Fahrenheit. The pool goers have the opportunity to dine at the local restaurant whilst visiting the springs.

GRUTAS DE TOLANTONGO, HIDALGO

This spot is an impressive collection of hot springs that have been built into the side of a cliff in Hidalgo. It puts even the most luxurious hotel swimming pools to shame. The assortment of pools contains mineral-infused water, that has been heated by the surrounding volcanic mountains. Visitors of the iconic hot springs get to bask in the beauty of the mountains as they soak.

STRAWBERRY PARK, COLORADO

One of the most fun ways to experience a hot spring is when you are in dire need of some warmth! Colorado, when the time is right, is a beautiful winter wonderland, and just the place to seek out a hot spring. After a day of hiking or skiing, imagine relaxing in 104 degree mineral water. Right after, there’s a historic lodge where you can get a massage… Talk about relaxation.

AHALANUI THERMAL POOL, HAWAII

Leave it to Hawaii to host one of the most magical hot springs on the list.  Here’s what makes it so special.  A volcano heats the water underground and throughout the day the Pacific Ocean slowly rolls in over the rocks, making the temperature just right.  The hot spring is part of the Hawaii County Beach Park on the Puna Coast. It’s constructed by rock walls but the the pool bottom has been left natural.
