Don’t go chasing waterfalls they sing… but we totally disagree. Waterfalls are some of the most beautiful secrets of the world, a unique mix of the dramatic and insane liberation. Some are perfect for those frolicking, Tarzan and Jane moments. Others are more appropriate for plain and simple jaw-dropping. Either way, forget those infamous TLC lyrics. It’s time to do yourself a favor and give yourself some TLC – go find yourself some waterfalls and enjoy.
Niagara Falls in USA/Canada
Everyone on the planet has heard of Niagara Falls. The backdrop for countless movie adventure scenes, the setting for dozens of romantic moments, these waterfalls are breathtaking slices of nature. Made up of three smaller waterfalls, the Niagara Falls have seen daredevils (idiots) pay $30,000 to adventure down them. We’re good at staring with lust, thank you very much.
Gullfoss Falls, Iceland
‘Gulfoss’ translates as ‘golden’, and these falls were named after the gorgeous coloring of the region. We love it here because the waterfalls sit at right angles, which means that dreamlike rainbows often crown the majestic views.
Kaieteur Falls, Guyana
Four times larger than Niagara, believe it or not, the Kaieteur Falls are fricking awesome. Hidden away in the rainforest, they are surrounded by lush greenery full of secrets. This is somewhere to go if you want a real adventure. It is the Jungle Book meets Jurassic Park: experts believe Kaieteur has existed for over 20 million years.
Iguazu Falls, Brazil and Argentina
When these waterfalls were seen by Eleanor Roosevelt, she exclaimed ‘Poor Niagara!’. Enough said.
Plitvice Falls, Croatia
Slightly more subtle, immensely more romantic. These are the waterfalls of intimacy, little pieces of magic that dot themselves between endless greenery, without being as large as to demand a helicopter (first world problems…). There are caves galore, and rivers flowing as a gorgeous accompaniment to the limestone and chalk backdrop. We need to be there. Now.
Angel Falls, Venezuela
Argued to be the highest waterfall in the world, this is one dramatic setting. Just looking at it’s sheer and utter beauty and incredible vastness tells you why it is a UNESCO Heritage site, meaning it is one of the most special places on the planet.
Victoria Falls, Zambia and Zimbabwe
The largest in the world, the Victoria Falls sit in the Zambezi River, providing a setting that even Tarzan would be jealous of. Their indigenous name is Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means ‘smoke that thunders’. With the endless drum of water hitting water, and sprays coloring the sky, it’s not hard to see why!
Burney Falls, California
Theodore Roosevelt called these falls the 8th wonder of the world, alluding to the 100 million litres of water which fly over McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park every day. What look like hundreds of waterfalls, and right near our home. DREAM.
Ban Gioc–Detian Falls, China
These falls may only be 98ft in height, but they’re just so, so pretty. They stream telling legendary tales of their Oriental past. Rumour has it that if you make your way into some of the cliff’s caves once used to hide bandits, you may just stumble upon some treasure.
