Festivals
Festivals. Pockets of the impossible interspersed around the world, at all times of the year. From this weekend’s Coachella, with its desert-escapism and pool-party promises, to the brown yet enticing mud of Glastonbury, we have sorted through the very best the globe has to offer. We’d say it’s been tough, but it hasn’t. Every option has been handpicked, every sight absorbed with wonder and every tastebud delighted. Each festival is either one of the most glittering and colorful dreamlands imaginable, or the stage for the best music you will ever hear. Whatever you’re after, these festivals grant every wish. We’ve even got a little Middle-Eastern magic included in the list, just so that we can tickle your Disney-like fantasies, too. For these festivals are all built on the same, enticing premise: everything is possible.
Just a note: festival dates are those of 2016.
Coachella, California
April 15-24, 2016
The fun of the sun and its fairy tale freedoms begin in earnest this weekend. Coachella spans two weekends in April, providing a haven for boho gods and goddesses from every corner of the globe. A haven of sun-drenched visions. A haven of wanderlust. Its dreamlike ferris wheel provides the well-known backdrop of all the frolics of the fair, with acts such as Ellie Goulding, Guns N’ Roses and Calvin Harris providing the soundtrack. A little tip for the best bikini vibe: soak up the atmosphere of inflatable animals floating around people as beautiful as their backdrop. Get yourself to one the sponsors’ pool parties. Now.
Glastonbury, Somerset, United Kingdom
June 22-26, 2016
Kate Moss in teeny-tiny shorts and wellies. And mud. A lot of it. That is all you need to picture Glastonbury, one of the biggest, and most famous festivals there is. And for good reason. England raises the stakes with this one, attracting 135,000 people to the fields of the countryside. The music is the greatest found on earth, and the vibe is so, well, vibey, that the pretty-much-guaranteed rain just adds to the atmosphere. Nothing can ruin it. We dare you to try.
Sonar, Barcelona, Spain
June 16-18, 2016
Taste some Spanish spice in the form of this world famous electrofest. Unlike many of our other favorites, Sonar takes place in the middle of the city: it is an urban dreamland. The music is immense and its various locations keep things interesting. If you want to explore one of the most stunning cities in the world, with Sonar’s euphoric and fashionable mentality, this is definitely the one for you.
Secret Garden Party, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom
July 24-27, 2016
The Brits have done it again with this one. An artistic feast from corner to corner, this festival celebrates all that is Summer. The color is unparalleled, with the endless opportunities of SGP manifested in every way imaginable. From quintessential boating on the site’s gorgeous lake, to fabled sunflower fields accessible through porta-potties, this is a picture book waiting to happen. What will your story be?
Burning Man, Nevada
August 28-September 15, 2016
There are no rules. That is, really and truly, all you need to know about Burning Man. Possibly our favorite festival of the summer, Burning Man attracts Google Execs to flower-power felines alike. Whilst Kimmy K crashes the internet, this Nevada stalwart pretty much crashes instagram. The seriously stunning backdrop and over-the-top costumes make Burning Man a vision you will never forget. Ever.
SX, St Martin
March 9-13, 2016
Whilst we float around festivals in swimsuits whatever the setting, SX allows us to flaunt our fabulousness in the epitome of bikini-enducing backdrops: St Martin. Yup, you read that correctly. This techno-haven finds itself in the Carribean and is a setting of freedom and fabulousness. Five days on the golden sands of the Caribbean, basking in the striking sun of sets by Jamie Jones and Adriatique. This is all the glory of Ibiza, but before summer even starts. And it’s a boutique festival, meaning it has more of a party atmosphere – more space for frolicking in the Caribbean seas, then.
Beyond, Morocco
February 26-29, 2016
A little less known, but thoroughly magical down to a T. Think the Sahara. Think camel convoys at sunset. Think sand boarding. Intrigued yet? If that’s not enough, imagine nightfall welcome a party under more stars than you’ve ever seen before. And we mean ever. Play Aladdin and slink around on the magic carpets which the sandy floors of the desert. But don’t worry, you don’t have to sleep on the ground; revellers are provided with four poster beds to lay their partied-out heads on. Four posters? In the Sahara? Yup, you heard it here first.
