Imagine a spot resembling St. Tropez-like sophistication, paired with unassuming, blasé Caribbean charm. St. Bart’s is an overseas collectivity of France, and proudly welcomes A-listers such as The Hadid’s, Chrissy Teigen, Beyoncé and Jay-Z. With every reason to be pretentious, the island boasts a relaxed, shoes-optional vibe, which just might be the very reason it’s so adored.
Planning a trip St. Bart’s leaves many of us full of questions. From the fundamental question, “How do I get there?”, to the critical question, “How do I spell it?” (Technically, it’s St. Barth’s to locals and St. Bart’s to English speakers). Now that we have that squared away, here’s everything else you need to know when planning your own perfect island getaway.
transport
Fly into Princess Juliana International Airport on the island St. Maarten. There are direct flights from many major cities around the world. From there, you have two options. You can hop on a 10 minute shuttle flight to St. Jean Airport on St. Bart’s. However, many opt out, due to the prop-jet and record setting short landing strip on St. Bart’s. Many prefer to jump on the 45 minute ferry (try the Voyager or the Great Bay Express) that’s also available. Once you’re there, considering there is no public transportation, you will need to rent a car. There are taxis on the island, but adventures all across the island await, and you will be happy to have a car.
eat
Options, options. It all just depends on what you’re looking for, but that’s what’s so great about St. Bart’s. You can find whatever you’re in the mood for. If you feel like grabbing something quick (but delicious) try: Maya’s To Go, Kiki-E Mo, or Tom’s Juice Bar. For the finest produce on the island, check out Marché-U (but make sure to go on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday while it’s super fresh).
While you’re on St. Bart’s it would be a mistake to miss out on the opportunity to dress up and experience the glam the island has to offer. Try Bagatelle (where Tash and Dev dined and enjoyed the night!), Bonito Saint Barth, or On the Rocks at Hotel Eden Roc.
stay
Villa Marie: A tropical chic destination, this is where Tash and Dev stayed in 2018. They stayed in a Villa on the property, overlooking the magnificent Flamands Bay. The terrace surrounded by lush vegetation, plus the calming ambiance was absolutely perfect for their trip. The custom décor, full of bohemian and colonial influences, is just right for St. Bart’s.
For a more affordable option, check out Le Village. If you’re going with family, Le Guanahani is an excellent option, as it’s a huge property yet somehow feels intimate. And if you’re ready to go all out, look no further than Eden Roc St Barts. It’s the best of the best, and was home to St Bart’s first mayor. No details were spared at this world-class resort.
play
It’s said that there are 14 beaches on St. Bart’s. Each has something unique to offer, and each is stunning. One of the most popular beaches on the island (and often thought of as the most beautiful in the Caribbean) is Saline Beach. Some consider this a nude beach, so be warned! Colombier, on the very northwestern tip of the island, is a remote, stunning beach, only accessible by foot (or boat). It requires a 30 minute hike down a long narrow trail. Well worth the effort!
Another great beach option is Petite St. Jean Beach. Walking distance to St. Jean, this beach is calm and perfect for kids. Flamands Beach is a long and deep beach and can have impressive rolling surf during the winter months. And of course, the legendary Shell Beach. Tash proclaims it’s her favorite beach in the world, and it’s easy to see why. Millions of seashells cover this beach, and it’s surprisingly comfortable.
For more of a vibrant, party beach scene, St. Bart’s provides. Nikki Beach, which has locations around the world, is of course posted up in St. Bart’s. Their tagline is “Tell Only Your Best Friends”, alluding to the exclusive nature of this beach club. Pearl Beach is another great option to sip on cocktails and people watch.
TSR‘s last suggestion is to make time for a scenic drive on Grand Fond. It’s a must-do to take in all the fresh ocean air and see miles upon miles of breathtaking scenery.
Absolutely love this write up! I am a regular that frequents the island several times a year and agree with everything they wrote. It’s the most magical place on earth!
