Designer Profile: Alice McCall

Alice McCall6534bwBeing avid wearers of Australian designer, Alice Mccall’s, designs Devin and I were naturally excited to hear she would be adding swimwear to her collections and, as per usual, Alice did not disappoint.

We were given an exclusive sneak peak of the designs and immediately knew we had to share them with you! Devin and I sat down with Alice to learn more about the collection and as one of Australia’s best selling and most innovative designers,  we were of course inspired by her words of wisdom. We then packed our suitcases and set off to Miami to shoot the never before seen high waisted, plunging swimwear designs, in true A Bikini A Day style, amongst sand and palm trees!

So without further adieu here is our exclusive shoot of at Alice Mccall’s first ever swimwear range and our exclusive designer interview!

Tweet us your thoughts on Alice’s NEW swimwear collection: @abikiniaday! xxDesigner, Alice McCall interview:

What does the bikini represent in your mind?

Summer, holidays and good times.

Creating the right fit in swimwear is very different to apparel, did you struggle with this at all?

Like with anything I design, my team and myself spend a lot of time fitting garments on our fit model. This is an integral part of the design process.

Who is your personal icon and why?

At the moment I love French actresses and musicians like Josephine de la Baume, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon.

If you could use three words to describe your collection what would they be?

Pretty, modern, cool.

What has been the most exciting moment of your career thus far?

Here and now. I am very present in what I do, I am humbled by this moment and grateful. The brand is stronger than it has ever been.

Does your swimwear collection tie into the ready to wear collection?

Yes. There is a nod to 90’s Alaia and Versace with engineered lycra fabrics in classic shapes.

What is your personal favorite style of swimsuit?

I love a classic black brief bikini.

What type of girl do you have in mind when designing your swimwear?

I love the Victoria’s Secret girls – healthy and fab bodies.

Does Australian culture influence your designs at all?

My designs are inspired by what I want in my wardrobe, an internal desire, not necessarily by Australian culture.

What do you think the most important thing is when designing swimwear?

Fit, and a perfect balance between being flattering and sexy while also modest.

What is your take on the social media age and does social media play a large role in your company?

Yes absolutely. I love being more connected with our audience through social media platforms.

What do you think makes a woman beautiful?

An inner grace and an outer confidence.

What do you look for when casting models for your campaigns?

Of course beauty, but also an inner spark and point of difference.

What do you pack in your beach bag?

Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense SPF 30, Alice McCall sunglasses and beach towel and a bucket and spade for the kids!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Vintage explorations and artifacts collected from world travels.

Do you believe in following trends?

Largely no. I am very intuitive in design, I don’t spend a lot of time following trends. I think this is the key to the brand’s success.

What do you think it takes to be a top designer in Australia and do you have any words of advice for those who want a career in the fashion industry?

Having a strong vision that you stick to, dedication and unique, consistent brand DNA.
